The Gift of a Simpler Time



When much is stripped away 
It creates a cleansing of sorts.
It strips you down to the basics. 
Letting you see what you've been missing. 
Where your priorities have been off 

Its where the Lord meets the heart 
because you're finally still enough to listen. 
In this simpler time.

And you wait.

The dust dissipates. 
You settle into a new normal.

Looking around, you see. 
The most important things are still there.  
Peaking through.  
You realize, the loss of the last months of middle school and kindergarten
the canceled family birthday party
weekend away, Michael Bublé concert and daughter's first sleepover...
All pale in comparison to what really matters. 
Your people. 
Your family. 
Your friends. 

You've been given time with no agenda. 
The pace of your mind slows to your schedule.
And your heart leans into a simpler time.

Through Your Child's Eyes

There are long days (really if we're honest there are long weeks, months and sometimes even years). Days when I barely have time to sit and hold the Little's. Days when I don't want to hold the Little's. Moments when I don't feel like being a mom (just a little honesty here). Then there are days I don't make the best choices in guiding my children. You know? Its those days when you use harsh words, yell and end up hiding in the bathroom. Yup...those kind of days. At the end of these days I feel like a failure as a mom. Ultimately this feeling is  a choice I'm making; to feel that I'm a failure. I need to choose to move past it. DIY Outdoor Play Kitchen

While making play dough as a kid, I remember my mom having us put all the ingredients together and then she would cook it over the stove top. I can still recall that unique smell and the way the play dough felt so warm on your hands when you pulled it out of the pot. Then watching the food coloring move through the dough as I kneaded it was like magic. There is something about the smells and textures within a sensory activity that engrains the experience in your memory. I want my own children to have similar memories that stay with them through adulthood. This brings me to one reason why I created an outdoor play kitchen for our kids two years ago. I want my children to have memories of playing and exploration as researchers, testers, builders, risk players, explorers, adventurers, creative thinkers, and curious scientists.
